Busting 3 Car Fuel Efficiency Myths

Fuel efficiency is a topic that has been discussed for quite some time now. It’s also a major factor in how modern cars are designed and built to operate. It seems that every day new information is released about how to improve a car’s performance while saving on fuel.

It’s difficult to determine which information or studies are reliable. Some are well researched while others are pure conjecture or speculation. Take a look at these 3 fuel efficiency myths that you may be wasting your time with.

Increased Tire Pressure

There’s evidence that low tire pressure can significantly impact your car’s fuel efficiency by 0.2% for every 1 psi below the recommended average of all tires. But there’s also this notion that by over-inflating a vehicle’s tires, better fuel mileage can be achieved. This is simply not the case when you examine all things considered.

Although fuel efficiency is marginally increased with over-inflated tires, the amount of money saved will go directly into the cost of new tires. Increasing the pressure in a car’s tires will cause them to wear out prematurely. This will force you to buy new tires much sooner than perhaps you have budgeted for. The savings in fuel are not worth the trade-off of tire maintenance.

Use Better Grade Fuel

It has been reported that purchasing the more expensive yet better-performing fuel will save you money in the long run. Although premium fuel costs about $0.20 more per gallon than regular, a common myth states that higher-grade fuel will help your car perform much better in regard to fuel efficiency.

However, this is an inaccurate way of looking at fuel as it relates to your car. The higher-performing fuel is more closely related to the particular engine than overall gas mileage. Choosing a specific grade of gasoline has more impact on a vehicle’s life than it does on how far a full tank of gas will take you.

Manual Transmission Vehicles are Better on Fuel

It’s not unusual to assume that automatic transmissions consume more fuel as they shift up and down due to the conditions of the road. Those that drive manual vehicles often feel they have more control over how they shift gears, therefore, saving on fuel more effectively. However, this is not the case.

Since automatic vehicles operate with a computerized configuration, they have better control over the fluctuation of the RPMs. They don’t move up and down as much as a transmission that is manually shifted. A human’s driving habits aren’t as consistent as something that is governed by a computer. This consistency offers greater fuel efficiency.

Practice Due Diligence

Or perhaps you have a car that performs poorly in relation to gas mileage so you are looking for some fuel-saving tips.
